Reduce Grill Related Burns
Grill based workers compensation claims are normally tied to fast food employees feeling the need to rush and therefore not being careful with the large hot item they are working with. For that reason, some tips that should always be reiterated include:
HANGING ITEMS- generally all hanging and swinging personal items should be banned. These items drop into food items, get tangled on other objects and of course can cause burns on the grill. This would include lesser thought of items like shirt tails or cuffs, long mustaches or hair, as well as obvious jewelry or ties.
MINIMIZE WORKFLOWS AROUND COOKING EQUIPMENT- kitchen work spaces are normally put together with a specific workflow in mind. Employees should know that the best way to get from the drive thru to the walk-in is not by the grill. That way the walking employee is less likely to get burned by a hot object or to knock another employee into a hot object.
LET IT COOL- many burn claims are related to claims while cleaning grill equipment. Read the manufacturers setting and know how long it takes for your grill to cool. Share this information with your employees; request they use a timer before handling hot objects.
