Prevent Back Injuries
One out of every four workers compensation injuries is back related. Contrary to popular belief, incorrect or heavy lifting is not the only cause of back injury. Here are three tips (besides do not lift objects which are too heavy) to help your employees prevent back injury.
Avoid awkward and unbalanced postures- in an effort to reach unattainable objects employees often place themselves in strange postures or positions causing strain to back and other parts of the body. Emphasize the use of proper tools like step stools when reaching or grabbing for objects. Also, place frequently used items in place where employees are able to obtain them without over reaching.
Ensure proper footing- some back injuries occur due to cumulative standing in a location or in shoes which do not provide proper footing. Using ergonomic mats and requiring appropriate footwear will encourage proper footing and discourage back injury due to cumulative trauma.
Encourage stretching during breaks- Contact providers such as Safety Awakenings and post posters for employees in locker and break rooms which demonstrate stretches that can keep them limber enough during the work day and prevent injuries.
